RE: St. Joseph County Severe Weather Procedures for County-City Building
SEVERE STORM PROCEDURES
1.TORNADO
A. When a tornado watch is announced by the Weather Service, the County Commissioners, Mayor, Judges and the County Council will be notified via weather alert radios, EMA (or other sources). Other departments will not be notified unless the watch is upgraded to a warning.
B. A tornado warning will be announced on the PA system located in the· County Commissioners Office as follows: The siren will be sounded twice, 15 seconds each time; followed by the verbal announcement (also sounded twice) of “Code Storm is in effect." (Until the PA System is upgraded to include the other buildings in the County-City Building Complex, the Commissioner's Office will notify a Point of Contact in the Courthouses and Law Building).
C. All occupants of the complex shall proceed to the closest fire exit stairs to the basement of the buildings. With the assistance of a floor captain, those persons with medical and physical problems will go to the restrooms on their floor. Ibis information will be provided to Commissioner's representative for accountability purposes.
D. Floor Captains and Department Heads will make note of all personnel that fail and/or refuse to comply with evacuation procedures and provide this information to the Commissioner's representative for accountability purposes
